Autumn Durald Arkapaw (Cinematographer)

Autumn Durald grew up in the Bay Area. She attended Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Art History. She went on to receive her Masters of Fine Arts at the American Film Institute in Cinematography in 2009. Autumn Durald was selected as one of the 2014 Variety's "10 Cinematographers to watch", one of 2014 Variety's "Up Next" in their "Below The Line Impact Report" and Indiewire's "On The Rise 2014: Cinematographers To Watch." She is a feature and commercial cinematographer, and heralds a new wave on the cinematographic scene. Working with very visual directors to create lush celluloid landscapes. Written and directed by Gia Coppola from James Franco’s short stories, Durald lensed "Palo Alto". Starring James Franco alongside Emma Roberts, Jack Kilmer, Nat Wolf and Val Kilmer. Palo Alto screened at Telluride, with it's World Premier at the 2013 Biennale di Venezia. Variety's Peter Debruge applauded “the striking Steadicam lensing by gifted female d.p. Autumn Durald [which] buffers everything from harsh realism, allowing a slightly dreamlike quality into the proceedings.” Durald also lensed Sundance script "One & Two" starring Timothee Chalamet and Kiernan Shipka, directed by Andrew Droz Palermo, which premiered at the Berlinale 2015. Hollywood Reporter's Harry Windsor praised Durald in his One & Two review; "Gifted cinematographer Autumn Cheyenne Durald's (Palo Alto) dusky images and shallow depth of field recalls Roger Deakins' work on The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and the lyrical, prelapsarian world she evokes is the last place you expect to see teenagers apparating at will."

Durald lensed Max Minghella's debut feature film 'Teen Spirit' starring Elle Fanning which premiered at TIFF and with its theatrical release in April 2019. In his review of the film David Ehrlich praised Durald Arkapaw as “the unsung genius who shot “Palo Alto” and a bevy of killer music videos for the likes of Janelle Monáe and Solange Knowles, is instrumental in helping Minghella to thread the needle between those two modes. She inflects Violet’s world with glossy accents and dashes of epic drama; the nightlight at her deserted bus stop spreads long beams of light that wouldn’t be out of place in a Hype Williams video, while the field outside of her house is magic enough to work for Terrence Malick.” In the summer of 2018 Durald completed photography on Director Ry Russo Young's feature for MGM and Warner Brothers 'The Sun Is Also A Star' starring Yara Shahidi and Charles Melton.

In 2019 Durald lensed the ‘Beastie Boys Story’ and ‘Aziz Ansari’s Right Now’ for director Spike Jonze. She also wrapped production on Gia Coppola's latest feature titled 'Mainstream' starring Andrew Garfield and Maya Hawke which premiered at the 2020 Biennale di Venezia. Most recently she worked on Disney Plus Marvel Streaming series ‘LOKI’ starring Tom Hiddleston.
