Jennifer Kent (Major Shout Out to Naomi Pinkus for Tonight's Film)
Jennifer is an Australian actress, writer and director, best known for her directorial debut, the horror film THE BABADOOK (2014). Her second film, THE NIGHTINGALE, premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival was released this summer. When asked "Why aren’t there more female horror directors? Kent [said she] believes the shortage is a reflection of the dearth of women with power in the film industry in general. “It’s a bigger problem,” she says, noting there have been some great recent counterpoints to the horror-movie boys’ club... It will shift, as the world shifts,” Kent says, noting that there’s no lack of female horror fans. “Women do love watching scary films. It’s been proven, and they’ve done all the tests. The demographics are half men, half women. And we know fear. It’s not like we can’t explore the subject.” Read more on her thoughts on female horror directors here. THE NIGHTINGALE is set in 1825, Clare, a young Irish convict woman, chases a British officer through the rugged Tasmanian wilderness, bent on revenge for a terrible act of violence he committed against her family. On the way she enlists the services of an Aboriginal tracker named Billy, who is also marked by trauma from his own violence-filled past. Critics say it's "a masterful display of cinematic craft, an astonishing feat considering this is only her second feature, though her first - the eerie and more supernatural "The Babadook" from 2014, also about a woman in serious trouble - showed she was a talent to watch."
